Vice President JD Vance stood in for the late Charlie Kirk on Wednesday night, fielding tough questions from students at the University of Mississippi, as part of a national campus tour hosted by Turning Point USA.
The event honored the organization’s founder, the Christian advocate for conservatism, who was assassinated on September 10th during a college event in Utah.
Vance shared what he considers to be Charlie’s best advice for young people: “Charlie wanted you more than anything to invest in the things that are worth having, to build a life that is worth building…that most important advice.”
In a nod to Kirk’s signature debate style, Vance responded to questions on a range of topics — including immigration policy, religion in public schools, foreign policy, and how to bridge the divide between political parties.
He also touched on areas in which he believes Republicans and Democrats could work together, including limiting the power of corporate monopolies.
The appearance also marked the first public event on the tour for Erika Kirk who has taken over Turning Point USA following her husband’s death.
She thanked the crowd and the TPUSA family for their support and their prayers since the tragedy.
“You guys have no idea how helpful it is to have all of you in my life because you help me feel even more deeply connected to my husband. And I thank you for that, I thank all of you for that,” she said.
